Animal Hospital of Tiffin is pleased to offer rehabilitation services to our patients. Services may be recommended for those patients who just underwent knee surgery, those pets who are painful from arthritis and joint disease, trauma cases, and yes those pets who are slowing up a bit secondary to getting older and a little overweight.
Emphasis is placed on proper soft tissue diagnosis, problem solving, and most importantly on creating and meeting goals that are meaningful and functional to you and your pet.
Our Rehabilitation programs begin with a diagnosis from the veterinarian who communicates these findings to the rehabilitation specialist. The Rehab specialist then conducts a detailed evaluation looking at joint movement, muscle integrity, strength, and a neurological exam. Your pet's ability to transition between positions as well as his ability to walk are also observed and noted. Your input is also very important and you will be asked about any changes in behavior such as reluctance to take a walk or play, unwillingness to go up or down stairs, or difficulty in standing up.
Expectations that you may have or desired outcomes are taken into consideration when planning your pet's individualized rehab program. These programs establish goals or outcomes and include what we will do to accomplish these goals. The plan is likely to include therapeutic exercise, manual therapy techniques, range of motion exercises, core strengthening exercises, walking exercise, and the use of supportive modalities such as heat, cold, therapeutic ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and therapeutic laser. Your pet will also have a home program that he will need your assistance with.
